Open Access: Nature reduziert Preis von EMBO Journal und EMBO Reports
Open Access uptake prompts 9% price reduction for The EMBO Journal and EMBO reports:
Prices for site licence access to The EMBO Journal and EMBO reports will be reduced by 9% in 2010, reflecting the increased publication of Open Access content in 2008. Nature Publishing Group (NPG) and the European Molecular Biology Organisation (EMBO) announced the decision today, following ratification by the EMBO Council.
We’ve taken into account all of the relevant data in reaching this decision, including the number of Open Access articles published in 2008,“ said David Hoole, Head of Content Licensing, NPG. „This change reflects the recent growth in the amount of Open Access content in both journals and the corresponding partial coverage of publication costs by author charges.“
For the 2010 subscription year, there will be a 9% reduction on the 2009 site licence list price. This reduction is net of an annual inflationary price increase. Print and personal subscription prices are unaffected.
„We are delighted to be able to offer real savings to our library customers, based on the hybrid business model,“ said David Hoole in a letter to customers. „We hope this helps ease some of the pressure on library budgets, while increasing access to the academic literature.“

What also seems evident is that the bulk emailing activities of OA publishers inevitably lead to a number of other questions: questions (as I said) about the relationship between publisher and author in an OA environment, but also questions about the relationship between editorial decisions and commercial decisions, and indeed questions about the relevance of the traditional journal format on the Web, and the role of commercial publishers in this brave new world.

DeepDyve – da muß man was drüber schreiben, vielleicht ist es ja die Zukunft des Publikationswesens oder wenigstens das Ende der Bibliotheken… Diesmal habe ich mich aber mit allen Reviews und Unkenrufen zurückgehalten – und siehe da: Frank Norman hat es in seinem Blog Trading Knowledge viel schöner resümmiert, als ich es je gekonnt hätte: Not diving but skimming – a new source for articles.

Heather – in the DeepDyve blog post they go into more detail about how they have analysed the market and the need. In some ways it could be a race between this kind of service and Open Access. If OA delivers mass access anytime soon then DeepDyve is unnecessary. Until then, anyone outside of traditional knowledge-rich environments like Universities and Institutes may find DeepDyve helpful. Or they may not.

Nie waren die Chancen angenommen zu werden so gut wie dieses Jahr!
